What if worship isn’t just something we attend… but something that quietly, persistently re-forms who we are?
In the Worship as Formation video series, Rev. Dr. Craig L. Nessan invites us to see worship not as a weekly obligation, but as a kind of spiritual workshop where lives are reshaped over time. Like water carving a canyon or a melody teaching your lungs how to breathe differently, worship works on us slowly, steadily, and deeply.
Across the series, Nessan names six ways worship forms us:
- Gospel-centered – In a world that constantly tries to define our worth, worship recenters us in the good news of Jesus Christ. We are reminded that we are already loved, already forgiven, already claimed.
- Praising – Through song and liturgy, we learn to orient our lives toward God in every season. Joy and grief, hope and uncertainty all find their voice in praise.
- Peacemaking – Confession, forgiveness, prayer, and the sharing of peace train us in reconciliation. We practice the very peace we are sent to embody in the world.
- Grateful – In Word and sacrament, we remember God’s saving work and are shaped into people who live with open-eyed gratitude.
- Generous – Receiving God’s abundance loosens our grip. Worship forms us to offer not just resources, but our whole lives in service to others.
- Neighborly – Everything in worship prepares us for the sending. We are freed by the gospel to serve, love, and seek justice for our neighbors in daily life.
Taken together, these aren’t six disconnected ideas. They are more like facets of a single calling: a life formed by Christ for the sake of the world.
What makes this series especially compelling is its grounding in the actual practices of worship. This is not abstract theology floating somewhere above real life. Nessan points to concrete moments you already know well: baptismal remembrance, the sermon, the Eucharist, the Kyrie, the offering, the prayers of intercession. These are not just parts of a service. They are practices that shape a people.
And that shaping doesn’t stay in the sanctuary.
The heartbeat of the series is the sending. Worship gathers us, yes, but always with a purpose. We are formed as gospel-centered, praising, peacemaking, grateful, and generous people for the sake of our neighbors. The life of faith spills out into ordinary places: families, workplaces, communities, and the wider world.
