In our rural and small-town communities, the narrative of the church is often dominated by "loss, shame, and a sense of failure". We hear the palpable grief of congregations who feel forgotten or defined by their declining numbers. The CaSTLE Project (Country and Small Town Lived Ecclesiology) was born to change that story—to replace a narrative of decline with a story of hope, confidence, and purpose.
What is CaSTLE All About?
At its core, CaSTLE is about a paradigm shift. We are moving away from an "Attraction Paradigm," toward an "Equipping Paradigm". In this new way of being church, ministry is not just what happens on Sunday; it is how the baptized show up everyday life, in their families, schools, workplaces, and local communities.
We believe congregational vitality should not be measured by attendance or the presence of a full-time pastor, but by how well we equip the people to share God’s love in their daily encounters.
How the Work is Unfolding
Since our launch, we have been busy collaborating with synods across the country to bring this vision to life:
- Synod Subgrants: We have awarded subgrants to dozens of synods—from Eastern North Dakota to Virginia—supporting everything from mentor pastor training to ecumenical experiments.
- SAM Education: In 2026, we launched a unique one-year pilot program for Synod Authorized Ministers (SAMs). Ten students from five synods are currently engaged in a competency-based curriculum focused on baptismal ecclesiology.
- Expanding Resources: Our website, www.castleproject.org, is growing into a hub for rural ministry. We’ve recently shared Lenten resources like "Gathered by Grace" and hosted webinars on equipping for baptismal vocation in daily life.
- Widespread Impact: We are seeing high demand for simple tools like our Baptismal Promises Cards, which serve as daily reminders to live out our faith in all arenas of life.
A Future Rooted in Promise
The vision of the CaSTLE Project is one of holy creativity. When we stop asking people to simply do "something more" for the church and instead focus on God’s abundant activity in their daily lives, the burden is lifted and joy abounds.
