This CaSTLE Project series, Becoming Lament Doulas, is a thoughtfully designed course that brings together biblical study, practical ritual, and contextual reflection to help participants engage lament as a vital spiritual practice. Led by Dr. Helen Chukka, Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at Wartburg Theological Seminary, and Rev. Dr. Jan Schnell, Associate Professor of Liturgics, the course weaves together theological insight and embodied practice.
In this intro to the series, Rev. Dr. Chukka introduces key themes of lament in the Hebrew Bible, while Rev. Dr. Schnell guides participants through adaptable rituals suitable for personal devotion, small groups, or congregational worship. The series also includes conversational segments that connect these ancient texts to contemporary life, particularly in rural and small-town ministry contexts. While not exhaustive, the course offers a meaningful entry point into understanding lament as a tool for community care, spiritual expression, and faithful response to grief and hardship.
